Virtual Reality

Produce a fully immersive experience using powerful virtual reality creations tools like Tilt Brush, Blocks, Kodon, Animvr and others. Book in a VR session to use a room-scale VR system at your school or one of these facilities.

Augmented Reality

You can now create incredibly realistic visual effects using augmented reality on a recent model iPhone, Android or tablet. Check out some of these powerful apps to create your masterpiece.

Competition Rules

Create an immersive story or experience using virtual or augmented reality with any of the tools described here. The theme for the competition is "empathy".

  • Make a 30second video of your immersive experience (max 30secs!)
  • Upload your video to Youtube
  • Add a 140 character ‘artist statement’ to give the judges some context for your piece
  • Add the hashtag #empathy2018
  • Complete the details on competition entry form here- including a URL to your Youtube video

Entry deadline: videos must be uploaded (including comments/details added as above) and online entry form submitted no later than midnight 7 September 2018. Late entries will not be accepted.

Participating Schools

The competition is run in partnership with local high schools in Noosa and on the Sunshine Coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age restriction?

No, the competition is open to high school students in grades 7-12 at participating schools.

We don't have a VR system at our school, is there another option?

Yes, you can book a time to use the VR systems at CQU, Cooroy Library, J2 and the Peregian Digital Hub.

Is my school pariticpating?

The competition is limited to schools on the Sunshine Coast. Check the list of participating schools, below. If your school is on the Sunshine Coast and don't see it in the list, have your Art, IT or Head teacher get in contact with us, here to get involved.

Where do I submit my entry?

Check back in a week and we'll have an online form available for you to submit your entry.

What AR apps can I use?

There are some great AR apps on the App Store that can be used on AR-capable devices, including: iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, iPhone SE, iPad Pro (9.7, 10.5 or 12.9) – both first-gen and 2nd-gen, iPad (2017), iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhone X

What VR apps can I use?

There is a growing array of fantastic art creation tools for the HTC VIve and Oculus Rift. You can use tools like Tilt Brush (light painting), Blocks (low poly modelling), AnimVR (animation), Kodon (sculpting), Oculus Medium (sculpting), Oculus Quill (illustration/animation) and Gravity Sketch (3d modelling)
